What Is Character Counter?
A free online character counter for writers, SEOs, and marketers. Count characters with and without spaces, words, lines, paragraphs, and quickly check whether your copy fits title tags, meta descriptions, or social post limits.
Knowing exactly how many characters you have is critical across nearly every form of writing. Search engine titles are capped at 60 characters, meta descriptions at 160. Twitter posts at 280. Instagram captions at 2200. Email subject lines at 60-70. SMS messages at 160. Character Counter tracks all of these and more, giving you instant counts for characters (with and without spaces), words, lines, and paragraphs.
The tool goes beyond simple counting. As you type or paste text, the character count updates in real time alongside word count, line count, and paragraph count. A built-in reference panel shows common SEO and social media limits, with your current counts compared visually against each limit. If your title exceeds 60 characters or your meta description exceeds 160, you will see exactly how much you need to trim.
Two character count values are shown: with spaces and without spaces. This distinction matters because different platforms count differently. Some count everything including spaces (Twitter, Instagram), others count only visible characters (some SEO tools, SMS), and many SMS billing systems count with spaces for one part of the message and without for another. Having both numbers available eliminates guesswork.
All processing is local and instantaneous. There is no server round-trip, so your text — which might include proprietary content or unpublished drafts — never leaves your device. The tool also provides the total character count for the full text and per-line counts, which is useful for checking that each row in a CSV or each element in a list stays within limits.
