What Is Sales Tax Calculator?
A free online sales tax calculator. Add tax to a net price to get the total, or reverse-calculate the net price and tax from a total amount. Enter any tax rate for any country or region.
Sales tax rates vary by country, state, and even city, making it difficult to know the exact total cost of a purchase before checkout. Sales Tax Calculator provides two modes — Add Tax and Remove Tax — to handle the most common sales tax scenarios for any tax rate around the world.
Add Tax mode calculates the total price including tax from a net (pre-tax) price. Enter the item price and the tax rate as a percentage. The tool shows the tax amount and the total (net + tax). This is the everyday shopping scenario: if a $50 item has 8% sales tax, the tax is $4 and the total is $54.
Remove Tax mode (reverse calculation) does the opposite: given a total price that already includes tax, it extracts the original net price and the tax amount. This is useful when you see a final price on a receipt and want to know the pre-tax price and how much tax you paid. For example, if the total is $108 and the rate is 8%, the net price is $100 and the tax is $8.
The tool works with any currency and any tax rate, from 0% to 100%. This covers VAT (Value Added Tax) in Europe (typically 20-27%), GST (Goods and Services Tax) in countries like Australia (10%) and Canada (5%), sales tax in the US (0-10.25% depending on state and local jurisdiction), and consumption taxes worldwide. For zero-rated or exempt items, simply set the tax rate to 0%.
