Percentage change measures how much a value has increased or decreased relative to its original value. It is one of the most widely used calculations in business, finance, academics, and everyday life — tracking stock performance, measuring sales growth, calculating grade improvements, or comparing data trends. Percentage Change Calculator handles increases and decreases with a clear plain-English explanation.
Enter the original (old) value and the new value. The calculator immediately shows the percentage change, absolute difference, and ratio factor. If the value increased, the percentage is positive and labeled as an increase. If it decreased, the percentage is negative and labeled as a decrease. A zero change is displayed as 0%.
The absolute difference shows the raw change in value — for example, from 50 to 75: difference = 25, change = +50%. The ratio factor shows the proportional relationship: new value ÷ original value. A factor of 1.5 means the new value is 1.5 times the original (a 50% increase).
The plain-English output reads the result in words: "75 is a 50% increase from 50" or "40 is a 20% decrease from 50." The tool also shows: "75 is 150% of 50" and "50 is 66.7% of 75," providing a complete picture of the relationship between the two values.
